This is a game about gazing out over the smokestacks after dark, with the wind in your hair and a friend at your side and a thousand lights of progress on the streets below.

This Night on the Rooftops is a collaborative storytelling game for 2-5 players about friendship, growing up, and revolution. You will play members of a gang of children in The City, a fantastic world of industry and dying magic, where witches labour alongside factory-workers to make ends meet. It was funded on kickstarter for Zinequest 3 by nearly 248 people.

You will take on the role of one of 6 playbooks in a diceless and GMless experience: the Gutter Witch, the Soot Scrambler, the Tinkertoc, the Runaway Princess, the Disciple of the Tired God, or the Axekid in a story mixing slice-of-life with childhood adventure.

The System

This Night On the Rooftops uses a modified version of the no dice, no masters system. It swaps out weak, regular, and strong moves for Growth, Chill, and Desperate moves, which occupy different spaces in the fiction. It also uses Paths, which can give you additional moves or ways to interact with the game while you're on them.

Contents

The game is 56 pages long, and includes 6 character playbooks, 6 city playbooks, 16 paths, and a city sheet with rules for change and growth of the characters and the city. It is formatted as a 8.5x5.5 zine.

The game looks lovely.

Yessss! Family had zero and first session last night. Thought it was just going to be zero session. : ) The settings and questions / lists are evocative and lead to incredible conversations and comprehensive world building. My soot scrambler is named Smoug (honoring Smaug) and can’t wait to figure out  the  aesthetics of scratched out runes and bound Fae for the Parks at the next session.

Sounds awesome! Good luck to Smoug!

We played this on the actual play podcast Hope's Hearth and it was so much fun!

We didn't manage to play long enough to have a Revolution clock go off, but what we got through was so good. The different places in the City led us in play without forcing us into doing anything, and it was just so so good.

I struggle to write feedback but please just know we loved this game. :D

Thank you so much for creating such a wonderful game!

I really love the universe, The City is very evocative . All the playbooks are lovely.

Also I love the Growth & Revolution clocks and the Paths. It should create new dynamics in the Belonging Outside Belonging canevas.

I can't wait to play This Night On The Rooftops <3
